If you are looking for a great place to trail ride with your horse near Austin call McKinney Roughs to check on trail conditions and weather and throw your horses in your trailer and come on out!
I visited the Pope Bend Trailhead of McKinney Roughs, an LCRA park and recreation destination, which is locted east of Austin and west of Bastrop on Hwy 71. Park fees for rides are 10.00 per horse/rider, and you can buy tickets at the Visitor Center at the main park entry. At the Pope Bend Trailhead there is ample trailer space, water for animals, 12 x 12 runs, picnic tables and access to approximately 11 miles of equestrian trails ( no motor vehicles allowed!) While I was there I bumpted into the owners of the Happy Horse Hotel who were up for a an evening ride. They tell me that they also have tickets at their Horse Hotel just down the road (860 Pope Bend) and they also offer bungalows, trailer parking, and camping with your horses. They have developed their own awesome trail map of the equestrian trails in McKinny Roughs with special notes for horseback riders vs. hikers and they have trail tickets.
